What role does an EAM system play in practice?

If there is a close connection between an EAM system and ERP software in the company, important decisions about maintenance procedures can be made not only in connection with the operating costs of the plant concerned, but also with the revenue generated, the customer experience affected by this and other strategic factors.

Possible decision scenarios could be as follows:

  • A maintenance shutdown may be necessary to keep production running. However, if there are several important customer orders pending that cannot be delivered, the shutdown may have to be postponed
  • Quality issues impact a specific product line or customer relationship, which means the cost of maintenance and repair needs to be assessed accordingly – how it affects sales, what it means for regulatory compliance and the impact on customer satisfaction
  • The geographic distribution of demand is changing – equipment and physical assets in one part of the world need to be prioritized for maintenance, repair or lifecycle extensions over assets in other parts of the world
  • Compliance with the ISO 55000 and PAS 55 standards, which require management of the entire system life cycle, must be guaranteed
