Of course, in the event of a vacation or company vacation, you cannot simply switch off your own systems and machines at the touch of a button. In fact, switching off the machines completely is not really conducive to energy efficiency. Long and energy-intensive start-up times must be taken into account. For this reason, it is worth checking in advance which systems are worth shutting down completely during a vacation period, which systems can be reduced to a minimum output and which must continue to run regularly.
Which systems are worth switching off?
There are certain systems and components for which it is really worth having a shutdown concept. For example, compressors can be switched off completely or at least the pressure level can be reduced to an economical level.
Machines with short start-up times should also be sent on vacation before they consume energy unnecessarily during the rest period. It is well known in many places that air conditioning and heating systems can usually be switched off. You can also safely reduce ventilation systems to a low consumption level. Lighting in particular should normally be switched off.
Good to know: Numerous modern system controls offer the option of a vacation or vacation setting, in which the entire settings are adjusted and optimized for lower energy consumption.
Why is it worth shutting down machines?
In short: to save energy. But there are other factors involved in this obvious fact. If all machines and systems that are not required are reduced to a low level or switched off completely, the base load consumption can be effectively kept low. The base load defines the continuous consumption, i.e. 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. The base load is therefore the area with the highest proportion of energy costs. Here is a small calculation example: If the electrical base load is reduced by approx. 50 kW for just 14 days, a whole 16800 kWh of electricity, 3000€ in electricity costs (at a standard value of 18 ct/kWh) and 7 tons of CO2 emissions can be saved!
Clever energy management saves costs all year round
It is not only worth monitoring your own base load during the vacation period. Even at regular weekends or at typical off-peak times, there is often a worthwhile savings potential by reducing or completely switching off machines and systems. Enormous savings can be made in terms of energy and costs, and all without high investments. So check your systems and processes now to see which offer the best savings potential.
